In short

What Wordeo offers

Wordeo is free to download. On iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac, the free version shows ads. An optional Plus subscription, bought through the App Store or, where it is offered, Google Play, removes them and unlocks the extras the app lists. If you subscribed on another device or reinstalled the app, use Restore purchases. On iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android, Games sells coin packs where they are offered. Windows and Linux have no Games; they may show occasional promotions for our other apps, and no third-party ads.

What we collect and why

Looking up words (dictionary services). When you look up a word, the app sends it to Free Dictionary API for definitions, to Datamuse for related words and to Wikimedia (Wiktionary and Commons) for word origins and pronunciation audio. These services see the word and your IP address. The word-of-the-day widget uses the same services.

Analytics (PostHog). To understand how the app is used and fix problems, the app sends PostHog information about how you use it, including games and coins, and the ads and promotions you see or tap. It includes the words you look up, save, open or remove, and the names of lists you look words up from. This comes with a random identifier created by the app and basic device and app information, such as model, operating system, language and app version. PostHog also receives your IP address and uses it to estimate your city and country. On iPhone and iPad, analytics also records your tracking choice. The random identifier is not your advertising ID and is not linked to your name or email. There is no in-app switch to turn analytics off.

Purchases and ad measurement (RevenueCat). If you subscribe or buy coins, RevenueCat processes the purchase with a random identifier so the app can unlock and restore your subscription and add your coins. On iPhone, iPad and Android, RevenueCat also receives information about the Google ads you see, such as their estimated revenue, to measure ad revenue, including for people who do not subscribe. Apple or Google handles payment; we never see your payment details.

Ads (Google AdMob, iPhone, iPad and Android). If you do not have Plus, the app shows ads from Google AdMob, and in Games it may offer an ad you can choose to watch for coins. Where the law requires it, Google's consent form asks for your choice before ads load, and you can change it later in Settings. AdMob receives your IP address (used to estimate general location), device and app information, how you interact with ads, and diagnostic data, to show and measure ads and prevent fraud. On Android it may also use your device's advertising ID, which you can reset or delete in Android settings. On iPhone and iPad, Wordeo asks your permission to track you (Apple's "Allow tracking" prompt). If you allow it, AdMob may use Apple's advertising identifier to show you ads based on your activity in other companies' apps and websites and to measure them. If you do not, the identifier is not shared and ads are not personalized. You can change your choice in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. Google's policy: https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads

NordVPN banner (Nord Security). On iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac, some ad spaces may show a banner for NordVPN, a VPN service by Nord Security, labeled "Advertisement · Paid link". We take part in Nord Security's affiliate program: if you tap the banner and then buy from Nord Security, we may earn a commission. The banner is not chosen using your identity or activity; whether it appears depends on your app store's country, which is not sent to us or to Nord Security. Tapping opens Nord Security's website in your browser, where its own privacy policy and terms apply. The link carries our affiliate code but no identifier for you or your device.

Update checks. The app asks its app store, or our website on Mac, whether a newer version exists, sending nothing about you but your IP address.

Stored on your device

Your history, saved words and lists, study progress, coins, game statistics, settings and the random identifier are stored on your device. Removing the app or clearing its data deletes them, and unspent coins may be lost.

Sync (Plus, optional)

If you have Plus, you can turn on sync in Settings to keep the word lists you created, and the definitions saved in them, the same across your Apple devices, or across your Android devices; Apple and Android devices do not sync with each other. Sync is off until you turn it on on each device. Built-in study lists, your progress, history, coins and settings stay on the device.

We run no server for sync and never receive your lists. On Apple devices, they are stored in your private iCloud storage under your Apple Account. On Android, they are stored in a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive; the app cannot see your other Drive files, and Google can read the folder under its terms. Your Google account is used only to reach that folder and is never sent to us or our providers. Synced data counts toward your own iCloud or Google Drive storage.

You can turn sync off at any time. "Delete iCloud data" or "Delete Google Drive data" in Settings removes the synced copy, with or without Plus; uninstalling the app does not. If Plus ends, sync stops and your lists stay on your devices. Analytics records only whether sync is on, off or paused, never your words or list names.

Sharing

We share data only as described above: with the dictionary services when you look up a word, with service providers that work for us (PostHog, RevenueCat) and, for ads, with Google. Nord Security receives only what your browser sends when you tap its banner. We do not sell personal information and do not share it with data brokers.

Retention and deletion

PostHog keeps analytics under our project settings and its own policy; RevenueCat keeps purchase and ad records as long as needed to provide and restore purchases, measure revenue and meet legal and tax obligations. Because our data is tied only to random identifiers, we generally cannot find it from your name or email. To ask about or delete data, email us.

Children

Wordeo is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the use of your data. Email us to use them. You can also limit ads through the consent form in Settings, your device's ad and tracking settings, or, where Plus is offered, by subscribing.
